Top Dogs of the 2011-2012 TV season (Part 1)

Ready, set...play!

It's September and  if you're a TV show junkie you know that means that your evenings are about to become mega busy (or your TiVo severely overloaded). That's right, the major networks in the US kick off the 2012-2013 season this month and with 40 new shows to choose from, there will be something for everyone (and a bunch of rubbish thrown in for good measure).

If you ask me, a good dog can add a lot to a character and a show as a whole. They can be the star, the sidekick, a plot device or simply ornamental - it doesn't matter. Through clever use of amazingly trained dogs, showrunners can enrich their universe and make dog owners, like me, happy!

So, until we figure out what's actually worth an hour of our lives, I figured it was a good time to look
back and honour the five most memorable dogs of the past TV season. We considered dogs in scripted drama and comedy on the main networks and cable channels so no reality tv doggies this time.  For many who reside outside the US and are a season or more behind, this may contain mild spoilers, but I promise to try and keep them to a minimum!

In order to give you your daily dose of doggie cuteness and give them the spotlight they deserve,  we'll be honouring a different pup every day for the next five days. Without further ado, here is No. 5 on our list:

5. 'Monkey' from Gossip Girl, season 5

Ed Westwick as Chuck Bass with Monkey, his new best friend

Okay... before you shoot me, hear me out. I know Gossip Girl is old news and at best a guilty pleasure for some of you (xoxo AN ;) ) but there is no denying that their addition of Monkey the mixed-breed rescue dog was a brilliant one.

The drama, about a bunch of trust-fund-prep-school-kids-turned-college-dropouts in New York who navigate the complexities of life as Upper East Side socialites with the help (and hindrance) of their frenemies, finished airing its 5th season. It is now moving into a 6th and final season which will kick off October 8th on the CW.

Chuck Bass, the character pictured with Monkey is one of the original and main cast members: a millionaire playboy-bad boy turned well... who knows! But who cares? Because now, he has a dog!

The duo out on a walk in Central Park
Monkey is a total cutie and is trained to rip fake Prada to shreds. I wonder how many real pairs of Prada shoes he had to go through before he got it right? Definitely not in my budget to find out! He gets copious air time and has been used as a means to show Chuck's softer side. This dog is probably the only loyal character in the entire five seasons of Gossip Girl. For that alone he deserves a spot on the list! Jokes aside, the dynamic between the two is well portrayed and the relationship is a tender one.

Not only did the pooch breathe new life into a very tired character, but it also sent a great message as it is made clear that Monkey was a pound dog. Although I have not yet found any official statement about his breed, he looks like a Border Terrier mix. I love that they went with a more scruffy looking and adorable rescue instead of some designer Labradoodle for this part.

Any TV show that promotes dog rescue is good in my books!

On that note, NCIS and its sister show NCIS:LA also deserve a mention for their efforts. In NCIS, Pauley Perrette's character, the forensic genius Abby Scuito visits a dog shelter and plays with some adorable puppies and on NCIS:LA, Monty the rescue dog with PTSD becomes a loyal companion to Marty Deeks (played by Eric Christian Olsen).

Check back tomorrow to see who is in  4th place. In the meantime, feel free to chime in with your comments on who your favourites are and why!
